AA County Park Rangers Choose Teamsters
Updated On: Aug 24, 2011

On August 17 Arundel County park rangers voted by an overwhelming majority to join the Teamsters. The vote came following an arbitrator’s rejection of the County’s assertion that the Teamsters was not an approriate union for the 14 Anne Arundel County park rangers. The arbitrator ordered the Teamsters election.

In October of 2010, Local 355 filed a Petition for Certification with the County on behalf of the park rangers. The County Code provides the procedure by which an employee group requests that a specific union be recognized by the County as their exclusive representative.

In what seems to be a continuing attempt by the County to exert control over its employees, the Personnel Officer notified the Union of her determination that the Teamsters was not an appropriate representational unit to represent that group of people, and went so far as to suggest that the park rangers would be better served by AFSCME. The Union disagreed with the County’s determination and filed for arbitration.

With the arbitrator’s decision in their favor, the park rangers finalized their choice: Teamsters!
